Oviedo water plant requires $70 million upgrade to meet future water demands

OVIEDO – Oviedo leaders said they need to upgrade their water plant, and they'll try to do it without causing an enormous burden on utility customers

Oviedo's water plant, currently functional, requires a $70 million upgrade to meet the city's future water demands, according to Mayor Megan Sladek.

"There's nothing wrong with that plant," said Sladek.

The mayor explained the necessity of the upgrade, stating, "Even if Oviedo doesn't need more water, others are sipping out of it, so we are going one layer lower to ensure that we can make enough water for our residents."

She further elaborated on the issue of water consumption, not just within the city limits of Oviedo but also by those tapping into the same aquifer.

As more people use the aquifer, water needs to be sourced from deeper levels, requiring more treatment once it reaches the surface.
